On Tuesday, September 8th, a downslope wind event hit parts of the intermountain US including Steamboat Springs, CO. Storm Peak Laboratory, which sits on top of the Steamboat Springs Ski Resort at an elevation of 3220 m, recorded data including wind speeds, wind gusts, and wind directions over the course of the event.
The event begins at 6:00am on Tuesday, September 8 as wind speeds begin to increase throughout the morning. The highest observed gusts range from 70-75 mph between 3:00pm and 6:00pm. Sustained wind speeds from 3:00pm through 6:00pm reach 50 mph before beginning to steadily decrease. The wind originates from the east for the duration of the downslope event.
The HART group hopes that everyone effected by the wind is safe and that the reported data from Storm Peak helps to verify wind speeds in Steamboat Springs.
